Obituary ~ Mildred Margaret Scherlin
Mildred Margaret Scherlin

August 1, 1925 ~ April 25, 2026
Mildred (Peggy) Margaret Scherlin passed away peacefully in her home at the age of 100, leaving behind a life that spanned a century-one marked by compassion, resilience, and dedication to others.
She was born on August 1, 1925, in Dubuque, Iowa, to Norman Bull and Mildred Hubacher. She was one of several children and was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings.
Peggy began her lifelong calling to nursing at a young age, already working as a nurse by her early twenties. On September 20, 1948, at the age of 23, she married the love of her life, Earl Frederick Scherlin, who was 25. Together they built a life centered on family, hard work, and service to others.
She devoted 35 years to the nursing profession, including 17 years in a leadership role with the Chippewa County Health Department, where she helped develop and implement home care and public health programs at both the local and state levels. Her work touched countless lives and helped shape the care of her community in lasting ways.
Peggy and Earl raised three sons: Earl Edward Scherlin (Pat), Bruce Michael Scherlin (Jaynee), and Rodney John Scherlin (Shirley). She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Earl Frederick Scherlin, on October 7, 1992, and by her son, Earl Edward Scherlin, on December 4, 1997. She was a proud grandmother to Michael, Angie, Stefany, Cameron, Parker, Grant, and Adam, and was further blessed with great-grandchildren.
Peggy lived a century of grace, strength, and quiet abundance. Even through life’s greatest losses, she continued to show up-with love, resilience, and an open heart. She found joy in simple, meaningful moments: life along North Shore Drive by the river, watching her children grow, and later pouring that same nurturing love into her grandchildren. Her beloved dog, Ginger, brought her companionship and joy through the years.
She remained active and engaged well into her 90s, attending the YMCA, staying deeply involved in her church, and thoughtfully arranging flowers for many Sundays. She lived independently in her home until the very end, embodying both strength and independence. She was feisty and opinionated, yet never unkind-strong in a way that uplifted rather than diminished others.
In her final years, the Visiting Angels team became like family, drawn to her warmth and the gentle spirit that defined her life. She always had time to listen, to talk, and to extend grace. She offered steady support without judgment, and her compassion left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
To her family, her life represents the closing of a remarkable chapter-nearly a century of history, change, and perseverance. Though it is impossible to fully capture all that she witnessed and experienced, her legacy lives on in the way she loved, the care she gave, and the example she set. She will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her quiet service, and her abundant love.
A funeral service will be held on June 6, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Christ Church Cathedral, 510 S. Farwell Street, Eau Claire, Wisconsin. A luncheon will follow the service. A private family burial will take place later that day at Forest Hill Cemetery.
As her watch has ended, her light remains-a lasting symbol of the compassion and care she gave so freely throughout her life.
